Overall: 9/10
Summary
Acting: 8/10
Plot: 9/10
Interest: 9/10
Rewatchability: 10/10
Ok, I might be a bit biased on this one because I’m a native San Franciscan, but aside from that, I love this movie. For me, this movie is somewhere on my top 10 list. Everytime, The Rock comes shows on network TV (which is often in the Bay Area) I can’t resist the urge to sit down and watch a good chunk of it or the whole thing. Oh yeah, being a guy might be influencing the scores a bit too.
Acting: 8/10
While Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris didn’t receive any serious acting awards for their roles in the movie, I thought all the acting for top notch. All very believable characters and I didn’t once ever question the movie because of the acting. (this happens to me a lot while watching bad plots or acting) You really get a feel for all the main characters in the film and a good portion of the side characters.
Plot: 9/10
Loved the plot. After all the times watching it, I didn’t pick up any major holes in the story or any unanswered questions. The film’s action sequences are plentiful and exciting to watch. For the movie to be based in San Francisco and to have Alcatraz Island AKA The Rock play a major part in the movie was a huge huge huge plus for me as I got to relive my experiences in the Bay Area as well as see how many of the films locations I’ve actually visited myself. If you’re looking for a love story, I would skip this film. The film does have a love story in it, but it is obvisious that it wasn’t to play a major role in the movie.
Interest: 9/10
I’ve watched this movie a few times now, so for me there are a few snoozes in the movie, but for the new watchers I’m sure there’s very few and far between scenes that you would use to take your bathroom break with. The pacing moves the film along very well and the slow scenes are as interesting as the action scenes.
Rewatchability: 10/10
I could watch this film many many more times before I get sick of it. The actions scenes are enough to get me to watch it again, but the good plot, strong characters, and locations will bring me back over and over.
A quick comment about The Rock Soundtrack. The soundtrack is also one of my favorite movie soundtracks. If you listen to it, many of the music tracks elements are also in other younger action flicks. (makes sense because the producer of the soundtrack, Hans Zimmer, does a lot of the Hollywood action movies soundtracks these days.)
Yes yes, I sound like a fanboy and that may very well be true, but almost all of the friends I talk to also enjoyed the movie when they watched it. Maybe not to the extent that I enjoyed it, but still enjoyed nonetheless. A must if you live in or around the Bay Area and even if you don’t The Rock is a very good action film to watch. Bottom line: Go see this movie!
