The Great Digital Transition of 2009

dtv-476x375 The Great Digital Transition of 2009

Amazingly, the DTV coupon program intended to give consumers a free converter so that their analog TV can accept digital signals has gone broke. Despite having a $1.34 billion budget, the program is coming to an end. President-elect Obama has actually called for a delay in the transition date (originally intended for Feb. 17,2009), but FCC chairman Kevin Martin has announced that the delay would only spread further confusion. About 7% of the US population are estimated to be stuck in the middle ages watching standard definition television, which really boggles my mind. However, most TV companies have not planned for a delay in the transition, and continuing to run two separate transmissions after Feb. 17 would lead to major financial problems for the companies. As of right now, the transition is still going through as intended unless Congress swoops in and changes it. Are we, as a country, ready to leave over 21 million people in the dark in regards to television? I say, yes. The transition has been announced in every venue for quite a while now, and chances are if you haven’t realized what’s going on, you’re not watching TV or using the internet or listening to the radio and you’re basically living under a rock, for which case you don’t need to worry about the transition anyways. There’s about a month left, so there’s still time. Tell all of your loved ones, your friends, your neighbors, let them know about the incoming glorious revolution of digital television!
