Maximum Speed on a 802.11g Wireless Network

My brother somehow got it in his head that our wired connections are faster than are wireless connections in our home. He says that they “just are”. His proof is that when he sometimes does a direct download from one of our computers that use wireless that is sometimes slow. Yes, that’s his entire argument. Sometimes it feels slow… The funny thing is that he’s a science guy. You know, the kind of person that doesn’t just accept something without some proof or at least some idea of what he’s talking about. I guess it’s only for certain things he’s like that.
So back to the point. Our internet at home is 6 Mps downloads. While the maximum wireless speed in theory for a 802.11g router is 54 Mps, it can never reach that high in real life. The max according to most experts is 22 Mps. That is still far from my home connection max of 6 Mps. My brother based his conclusion on, well I get 20 kps on the laptop and 40 kbs on the desktop, without knowing anything about wireless connections.
So if you ever think that your residential wireless connection is slower than your wired one, there are probably a lot of external factors you’re no considering.
