Gran Torino (2008) | Kevin and Ray Movie Review

grantorino Gran Torino (2008) | Kevin and Ray Movie Review

Overall: 7.5/10

Summary

Acting: 9.5/10
Plot: 7.5/10
Interest: 8.5/10
Rewatchability: 3/10

I walked into this movie with pretty high expectations as I loved Clint Eastwood in Million Dollar Baby. I had just watched Million Dollar Baby a few weeks ago and it feels fresh in my mind. I expected more or less the same in this movie and it delivered.

Acting: 9.5/10
Now I can see why some readers may be surprised at the rather high acting rating, but I believe it is justifed. Clint Eastwood’s acting as Walt Kowalski was top notch which most people agree. He makes a very believeable character as the old racist war vet that never got over what happened in the war (which you don’t find out until the very end, but is predictable) Now a lot of people would say Bee Vang’s acting as Thao Vang Lor was very subpar. While I did chuckle now and then at his acting, I want to believe and do believe that it was done on purpose. Now I’m asian myself, so I have a good impression on how asians act in real life. In the movie, Thao acts very much like an asian in real life if put into his situation. Actually I was quite surprised to see that in the movie and not see him turn super heroic ‘I’m-going-to-bust-out-of-this-basement-gate-and-shoot-it-up’ type of deal. His fists didn’t make dents in the gate (actually his swings at the gate looked quite girly). The rest of the characters in the movie were all decent, but nothing to really talk about there.

Plot: 7.5/10
The plot of the movie was a bit predictable, but not in a way that ruined it. I could tell the general direction of the movie. This could also have been from the great acting and character development though.

Interest: 8.5/10
I was glued to the screen the entire duration of the movie so it gets high marks there. I never found the movie slow or too fast. Good pacing. I even watched him mow the lawn for the both of the full durations… I have to re-evaluate my movie watching.

Rewatchability: 3/10
Gran Torino is a good movie, but I cannot see myself watching this again. There’s nothing to bring me back to it. Everything been said and done. If a couple of friends were watching it, I would watch with them. Very little in the film has great rewatchability for me.

All in all a good film to watch. I didn’t get pull off by the racism in it because I never even hear that stuff in real life. The words just didn’t shock or offend me. (I’m asian) Or maybe I should be offended and write him a letter. Nah, I’m not offended. Bottom line: Go see the movie if you’re a Clint Eastwood fan! (still a decent watch for everyone else)
