Cow Fistula: Hole Allows People To See Into The Cow’s Stomach

I almost threw up writing this up. Cow holes aren’t new, but I assume most people haven’t seen this before.

Agricultural scientists add a hole (fistula) in the cows in order to study the animal’s digestive system and use the infomation to find better sources of food for the cattle. By adding a fistula to the cattle, a scientist can remove food during the digestive phase and study it. This gives the scientists a lot more infomation than having to study the end result of the food. (aka feces)

While this may seem cruel, it turns out that it doesn’t hurt the cow and even may benefit from the hole if they ever get a stomach disease because doctors will be able to administer medicine directly to their stomach. Also what you can’t see in the pictures is that the hole isn’t directly open to the outside environment because it is covered by a seal called a cannula.

Continue for more disturbing pictures.

These cows have been given a fistula, a hole directly into the stomach that scientists can reach into and study to see how certain foods get digested. Through this kind of work, better food can be concocted and studies into stomach cancer and other problems can be conducted. Although it looks inhumane, the cows don’t seem to mind.
