Basic Computer Maintenance by Ray and Kevin

Alright, so you’re sitting there reading this glorious blog from your computer, and suddenly, a window pops up saying “FAIL FAIL FAIL LOLZ” and everything is frozen. Then you see the mouse arrow moving and you realize you’re not moving it, and pretty soon, you see all of your most personal information siphoned off into god-knows-where and your life as you know it is brilliantly over. Sad. Or maybe you’re sitting there, and your computers farts out a dust bunny from its behind and it hops on over to you and yells “ACHOO!”
What you need are some good ol’fashioned spring cleaning techniques to whip your trusty computer back into spick-span shape and you’ll be back to reading more awesome movie reviews from us in no time.
1) Get an anti-virus program. And actually USE IT!! So many people will ignore a program because it seems to get annoying with all of its pop up reminders, but it’s a necessary evil. Or, you could just schedule the program to perform its scans and tests when you’re not around. You know, just a suggestion.
There are many free AND proficient antivirus programs out there, such as AVG and Trend Micro. Check out CNN’s download.com and search “anti-virus” and see what programs are getting the most hits.
2) You need a program to get rid of spyware/malware/all that bad stuff. Ad-Aware seems to be the most popular, but there are many others that are also free. Whatever floats your boat.
3) A registry cleaner will help clean out all the nasty bits and pieces programs leave behind when you delete them from your computer. It also has the added benefit of cleaning out other nasty bits and pieces in various programs; this ability varies from program to program. The most successful and popular is CCleaner. You can get it from download.com also.
4) Get an air cleaner. Blast all that disgusting grime and dirt from the innards of that beautiful piece of machinary you call a computer. Hug your computer and tell it that it’s clean and safe once again. Rejoice in the love.
5) Defragment your computer once in a while. Everytime you move anything; files, games, pictures, movies, fragments are left behind. The hard drive has to make more stops that are further apart on the disk to pick up these fragments, which leads to lag time and shorter hard drive life. Defrag will put these pieces back where they belong. For PCs, go to Start, then Control Panel, then under System Maintenance, find Defrag.
6) Update your programs! It sounds obvious but many people ignore updates that may be critical. When a program pops up a reminder to download updates, don’t save it for later! Just take the time now and you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble later.
