Alright, so first off, Babylon A.D. started out terrific. Vin Diesel makes for a great mercenary, and Melanie Thierry is pretty okay looking. It’s basically another post-apocalyptic movie styled after other epics such as Blade Runner and The Fifth Element. If you’re not into those types of movies, you definitely won’t be able to sit through this one. The story is incredibly painful to follow, but the final theater release was supposedly cut by around 70 minutes. Which is a lot. Maybe it could’ve been better. I don’t think so. But who knows. Maybe there could’ve been more cool vehicles to check out, because that’s pretty much all I was doing. The sets make nice eye candy for sci-fi freaks, and they use many futuristic iterations based off of modern vehicles. Vin Diesel has made some nice movies in the past as a bad-ass take-no-shit type of character, and I feel that’s what he’s best at. But you can definitely feel that he just isn’t allowed to be as bad-assed as he can be in this flick, mostly because the girl he’s trying to protect is whining and bitching about not killing people all the time. For fuck’s sake, let the man kill! She does have a cute ass, but the director chose not to exploit that aspect of her, which is a crying shame. Seriously, the movie could’ve been a lot more exciting if Vinny was completely unleashed. Cool Matrix-like animation and gun battles don’t make up for the lack of authentic emotions. The enemies don’t make any sense, are British, and are really really crappy at shooting, much like many other movies. I had similar thoughts after this movie as I did after watching The Island, “cool cars, but wtf happened to the rest of the movie?” Far too materialistic, focusing on an ideal that is lost upon the viewer. Beware of this one. Check it out for the cool vehicles and cool backgrounds and props, but don’t bother with trying to enjoy anything else.
