As Seen On TV Billy Mays Mighty Putty Review

WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS BILLY MAYS AND BAD ACTING. TURN DOWN YOUR VOLUME. (Actually, he’s not that loud in this video, but it still contains the bad acting though.)

Infomercial Review

There are many of the standard “why would anyone ever do that” scenes in the commercial. Billy Mays says Mighty Putty can hold up to 350 pounds in one scene and then in the very next scene pulls a 80,000 pound truck with it. They must have hired the same people who did the Big City Slider Station commercial. If these actors were real people, not only would they be the clumsiest people in the world, but also the stupidest.

To the guy who drills the hole in the wall, who drills like that? It looked like he had a seizure mid drill. Repairing a glass cup with Mighty Putty, yea that looks classy. Putting your hand under the cylinder block held up by Mighty Putty? yea why not. Fixing the water leak in the towel holder? works like a charm.

So the commercial basically tries to convince you that you have to buy Mighty Putty because leaks spring up in random pipes in your house all the time, your cup handles fall off every other day, and you work in construction. All in all, it’s an entertaining commercial to watch. Recommended.

Before I start, I want to bring up that Mighty Putty has been around forever, just under another name. It’s called epoxy putty or paste and you can buy it at any general hardware store or online. Epoxy putty sells for about $2 a stick meaning it’s about 60% off Mighty Putty’s price. (if you take into account Mighty Putty’s $8 shipping and handling)

Mighty Putty seems to be all over the board in terms of whether it works or not. Lots of people are saying it works and lots more are saying that it doesn’t. One thing I did notice is that people who were experienced in construction (read: knew what they were doing) said it worked well. (as well as epoxy putty even) In general, the people who said it didn’t work, were people like me, people who don’t know very much about construction.

One more caution, Mighty Putty as well as epoxy putty need to be stored at a certain temperture for the best keeping. If it’s stored too hot or too cold, the putty may get ruined. So basically, depending on how they stored your bought putty, your mileage may vary (YMMV) on it’s effectiveness.

After some testing, I found that Mighty Putty works on some things, but not the items people will most likely use it on. Mighty Putty works best on pipes (if you can wrap around it) and softer materials if the putty can meld into the nooks and crannies of the material. If the material is smooth (glass, paint, metal) and doesn’t have nooks and crannies nor can the putty be wrapped around the object, then the putty will not work well.

For repairing leaks, you should turn off the water before applying the putty. For the best results, leave the water off in that section for a full 24 hours before turning it back on. Many people were trying to repair leaks while the water was still running and it will never work as well that way.

We don’t have a rating system for As Seen On TV products. It’s either a buy or no buy. Although all these As Seen On TV products say ‘30 Day Money Back Guarantee’, their customer service will run circles around you. Always assume you cannot return products you buy from TV commercials or infomercials.

Bottom line: Don’t buy. How many times do you think you will use this? I doubt you have to repair that many cups, pipe holes, or pull that many 80,000 lb trucks.

If you do want to buy something like Might Putty, you can buy epoxy putty, which is the same thing and can be bought for 50% of the price too. You can buy Epoxy Putty for $2.15 a stick online or you can buy it at any general hardware store near you.

This article is deadicated to Steve, who cut off his finger and tried to Mighty Putty it back together. Now after 24 hours, he’s down 1 finger and $10.
