paperhouse $5,000 Paper House By Gerd Niemoeller And The Wall AG

If you live in California or another high cost of living area, you know that housing prices are ridiculous, even with the recent downturn. Well here’s the solution. A $5,000 house made of paper called The Universal World House. The paper house was invented by Gerd Niemoeller and patented by the swiss-based company The Wall AG. Also the German development aid agency, GTZ, and architect Dirk Donath helped with the design of the house.

The Universal World House fits eight people. So with eight people, they can own one for around $625 a piece if they want to share it. The paper house weighs 800kg (~1,750 lbs) and if you take away the foundation blocks it only weighs 400kg (~900 lbs). Well you know what a pain moving can be. With this house, you won’t ever have that problem, just lift with your 7 friends and carry it to your new location. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Retailing for about $5,000 (£3,375), the house is supposed to brighten up Third World shantytowns and provide quick shelter for long-term refugees. The Universal World House can be used almost anywhere: light, easily assembled, environmentally friendly, earthquake-proof and, crucially in the age of recession, a bit of a bargain.

The house has eight built-in single and double beds and a veranda with a sealed-off area housing a shower and a lavatory. It has been designed together with the German development aid agency GTZ, and with the architect Dirk Donath, from the Bauhaus University in Weimar.

Apart from the sleeping area, there are shelves, a table and benches. “It has been designed so that a family can slaughter an animal on the veranda, wash it in the shower and hang it, along with fish, on an integrated washing line.” The whole wall of the kitchen can be tipped open to let air in and to blur the distinction between inside and outside.

Great buy if you can get over the fact that it’s made of paper. Actually it might make a good playhouse for your kid. Sure beats making one yourself. These are FIRE SALE prices. (uh maybe not the right term there) If you want one, you better hurry; companies in Nigeria and Angola have already placed orders and the countries of Zimbabwe and South America are interested in buying.
